Ospreys

Saturday, May 22nd, 2010

I witnessed one of the Ospreys which are nesting in Lindsay Park here in Manawa.  Not sitting in the nest of course, but trying to catch some sun or sleep, I’m not sure which on the light pole adjacent to the nest.  I hadn’t known that we had nesting Ospreys and have for a few years.  Tammy told me that they had actually had to move the location of the nest as it was in quite a precarious spot prior to this year.  The Osprey didn’t pay us any mind, although as you can see from the pictures we were certainly in awe.

Walking Trails

Saturday, May 22nd, 2010

Thursday of this week, I discovered something new to Manawa or at least to me.  Our walking trails. In Lindsay Athletic park, just beyond the tennis courts, you can gain access to the trails.  Alot of work and pride have gone into the trail system. The friends of the Little Wolf River Trail continue building bridges, there is even a beautiful covered bridge and clearing trail and spreading wood chips, all so that we might have a trail system to access and enjoy.  The part of the trail that we were walking on meanders along the Little Wolf River, we saw turtles sunning themselves on logs at the edge of the river.  The trails are marked with orange trail markers (orange strips on the trees) and arrows point you in the direction you are to follow. I look forward to accessing the Pat Wade Memorial trail which lies just behind the Middle School.

Spring is for the Birds

Saturday, May 15th, 2010

We have action at our bird feeders all winter long.  The real treat comes in the Spring for all of us, when we will see friends we haven’t seen for awhile.  The Waupaca County area is a very desirable birding area, we have nesting eagles approximately 5 miles northwest of us.  We have been blessed to see them fly over our property several times. However on this day, my joy came in a slightly smaller package. These smaller colorful birds came to visit today, and I was very excited.  I am told the small blueish bird is an Indigo Bunting , I didn’t see them at all last year, so to have them back is indeed a treat.  I have friends who are incredibly passionate birders, studying them and learning about them.  Me…I am not quite there yet, I would say though that I am most passionate about them as they adorn the feeders and I can watch them while I am in the kitchen…that is a piece of heaven on earth.

Triangle Park Summer Concert series

Monday, May 10th, 2010

This all started last year.  St. Paul Lutheran Church right here in Manawa decided to make use of Manawa’s Triangle Park and sponsor some music.  It was such a big hit that there will be 3 concerts this year in Triangle Park.  These concerts will be sponsored by the St. Pauls Men’s Club, St. Pauls P.A.C.K. and Thrivent #30071. A donation to the Manawa Food Pantry will be accepted at these concerts, and greatly appreciated as well.  The first concert will be June 20th (with a rain delay of June 24th) and will feature Corner of G&S regaling concert goers with a mix of country and folk music, also featuring Marv Nielsen and Amy Schneider keeping us smiling with humorous folk and old time music.

Lindsay House Bed & Breakfast is fortunate to be directly across the street from Triangle Park, come and stay the night and enjoy some outdoor music and small town hospitality.

Stay for the music

Monday, May 10th, 2010

This weekend I learned something new about Waupaca County, from some guests of mine.  It is the Little Creek Music Festival 2o10.  It is being held June 27, 2010 at Steingraber’s Ponds at N7048 Bestul Rd just outside of Manawa.  The festival starts at 11 a.m. till the music’s done.  The featured musicians will be Tammy Drath & Jeanne Bauer performing with Loose Strings, a local bluegrass/folk/swing band.  The Heartland String Band featuring folk/country/bluegrass music, and the triumphant return of The Arkdale Ramblers.  Bring your own chairs, carry-ins are o.k. and there will also be food and beverages available. You will also be able to give a free will donation to help pay for the bands.  For more information call 920-596-3607 or 920-538-2072.
