For those of you out there who maybe have never thought of a bed and breakfast, or have only thought that it’s just for women…think again. There are lots of things to do that are geared for men as well as women. So ladies here is something that you can do for the man in your life and have fun with him as well, doing things that he likes to do. There are many other things in our area to do as well, such as cross country skiing, snow shoeing, snowmobiling, or simply hanging out with one another. Enjoy some time away with each other with beer, bowling and bar food. Kegler’s Bowling Center has lots to offer for a night of fun, 3 games of bowling each along with drinks and food ($35 value). In the morning enjoy a cup of coffee, cocoa, hot tea or cider at our coffee bar located just outside your door, followed by breakfast in the dining room fit for a King. 1 night stay $160 + tax, 2 night stay $280 + tax

Frosty fun at the Iola Winter Carnival

In the quaint city of Iola the 1st weekend in February is the Iola Winter Carnival, with such offerings as an Ice Sculpture carving, an authentic Norwegian Lutefisk dinner and even an indoor craft sale. The Ice Sculpture carving will take place near the infamous Vidar the Nordic Viking near the center of town on the corner of State Street and Chet Krause drive. Norwegian Lutefisk Dinner, 1 pm – 6:30 pm. Serving Lutefisk and fresh cod with drawn butter, meatballs, potatoes, vegetable, lefse and Norwegian pastries,you can enjoy the mearl family style. There will also be an indoor craft sale at the Iola-Scandanavia High School, stop on in and enjoy seeing what all the different crafters in the area have to offer.

New this year will be an Iola Twilight Snowshoe Race at the Iola Winter Sports Complex – 6:00 p.m.

Sunday, February 5th — Nordic Combined cross-country race-9:30 a.m., Central Ski Jumping and Nordic Combined Championships begin at 12:00 p.m. Central Wisconsin’s Finest Ski Jumping Facility in the state. Iola Winter Sports Club is located 5 miles northwest of Iola – County Trunk “MM”.

Even though I am challenged to pronounce this, it is an event sponsored by the Waupaca Chamber of Commerce and a host of passionate volunteers, I wanted to post this event. The snow today is a hopeful sign of all the wonderful winter activities that Waupaca County is known for, come on out and experience Waupaca county!

Friday beginning at 4:00pm

Join in the Clearing of the Ice to prepare the Wintervergnügen grounds. Bring your shovel to help clear pathways and rinks and enjoy FREE chili and hot chocolate. Chili donated by Klismet’s Three Squares Restaurant of Waupaca.
Participate in the Snowman Building Competition - registration available in advance or near the Lower South Park shelter building beginning at 4pm. Top three castles will win a Waupaca Area Chamber Gift Certificates; 1st – $40, 2nd – $15, 3rd – $5. $5 entry fee per team. Register for Saturday events including the Kids Ice Fishing Derby and the Snow Castle Building Competition from 4-6pm.

Broom Ball Tournament - Gather a team of eight people and participate in this double elimination tournament. $10 registration fee per team. Tournament will begin at 10:00am. Snow Castle Building Competition – Get a group of family or friends together and build your best snow castle on the ice. Registration at 10:00am and judging begins at 3:00pm. Top three castles will win a Waupaca Area Chamber Gift Certificates; 1st – $50, 2nd – $25, 3rd – $10. $10 registration fee per team. Snowshoe Races – Grab a partner and join in the fun of snowshoe race relays! Sign up for either the competitive division or the family fun division. Snowshoes will be provided for all participants. Same day registration available beginning at 10:00am with competitive division races at 11:00am and family fun races at noon. Registration will benefit the Waupaca Area Food Pantry. Bring a minimum of 5 can goods or $5.00 per team to participate. Advanced registration encouraged, click here for a registration form. Food & Beer Tent – Service from 11:00am until 6:00pm. Several seasonal microbrews available. Sponsored in part by General Beer. Culver’s of Waupaca will have roast beef sandwiches, chili, hot chocolate and coffee available for purchase.
Firework Demonstration at Dusk – Firework training demonstration will be viewable from the Wintervergnügen grounds. Exciting 10-15 minute show over Shadow Lake! Please park in South Park lots and exit vehicles to view the show. Viewing prohibited from Lakeside Parkway. Estimated show start time of 5:30pm.
Other Area Activities – Candlelight Ski & Hike at Hartmann Creek State Park. January 28th from 5pm – 8pm. Skiers and hikers can enjoy illuminated trails, a campfire, treats, hot cocoa and apple cider. Both the ski and the hike will begin at the Hartman Lake Shelter building. The hike is about 1 mile round-trip and the ski is about 2.5 miles round-trip. Guest can attend the event any time between 5pm and 8pm. A hot grill will be available for use. Dress warm and bring your own skies, snowshoes or boots. Park vehicle admission sticker will be required. The event may be canceled due to inclement weather. Sitting here on a snowy morning it seems hard to believe just yesterday we saw people out walking around in shorts and t-shirts. How quickly things can change with regards to weather and life. In talking to guests and future guests the number one concern is finding that perfect time to get away, and how will we do it, the planning and so forth. Sometimes the best things in life are spur of the moment, opportunities that present themselves and if not grabbed right then will be gone as fast as they appeared. You may be asking yourself how is she tying this into the bed and breakfast?, and here it is. Cards, Gratitude & Kindness

When asked if I enjoy being a business owner and Innkeeper, my answer is always the same YES! It is by far the best thing I have ever done. Meeting people right where their at in their life, helping them to destress, unwind, and reconnect with one another, that is a huge thing to be a part of. To be thanked at the end of a guest’s stay is always amazing to me, in the sense that I feel like it is we who should be thanking them for the privilege of meeting and getting to know them just a little bit. There is far more to this business than the cleaning and the cooking and all of the other things that go on. Because at the end of the day, it is first and foremost about our guests and how we can impact their life in a positive and non-intrusive way.

I wanted to take this opportunity to share the card which was given to me by one of our recent guests. Taking the time to make the card for us and really taking the time to show gratitude was so special. When we choose to go through life with an attitude of gratitude it can certainly make not only the person receiving, but also the giver’s life so much richer. So a special thank you to all of our guests, past present and future. For making our lives richer and brighter for being a part of our lives, and whether that is for a weekend or an evening, you become a part of our lives and business.

Honoring our Veterans

We were honored to have with us on Veterans Day this wonderful group of people. Some of them are retired, some continue to serve our country in the military. There is a special bond being a part of something bigger than yourself and the conversation flowed easily around the breakfast table. One of our guests was the featured speaker at the Veterans Home in King and she was honored to be asked. Even though most of our guests could only stay for one night, they commented on how rested and pampered they felt. I would like to take this opportunity to let them know and all veterans know that it is you who honor us when you choose to stay with us. Allowing us to serve those who have served others is the greatest compliment that we can be paid. So thanks to all who serve their country, their community and their fellow men and women.

I am so excited and looking forward to our annual Wisconsin Bed & Breakfast Association. It is a time for us to gather and receive continuing education and also what is current and cutting edge for our guests as well as for us as business owners. The networking and camaraderie that this conference affords us as Innkeepers is invaluable. To be among your peers whom you admire and respect, there is no greater teacher. Apple Picking in Waupaca County

It’s that time of year again where our generous friends ask if we would like apples, and I of course, always say “sure”. It is then that all the apple recipes you can think of and some you had never thought of come out of hiding. This year we canned apple pie filling, a first for me. Applesauce, which we use in baking recipes in place of oil to keep it a bit healthier. We also just peeled and sliced them and put them in bags to freeze, to be used later for muffins, breads and toppings for waffles, french toast and pancakes. Any way you slice it, being able to can or freeze fresh produce that you have picked yourself and you are confident of the source and the care that goes into growing the apples, that is a big thing and something we are proud to offer our guests. One more way we can bring the pride of Wisconsin to our table each and every morning.

Mike Rayson comes to Manawa

There is a Christian Concert being sponsored by the Manawa-Iola Methodist Church. It will be held Sunday October 2nd at the Manawa Masonic Center. As an evangelist and musician, Mike Rayson travels around the world each year preaching and singing about his love for Jesus. He has traveled the length and breadth of his home country of Australia, and also tours extensively each year abroad in countries like the USA, England & New Zealand. He has also traveled a great deal in Europe. Mike Rayson is all about communicating the wonderful, life giving, relational gift of grace.

So come on out to the Manawa Masonic Center and enjoy an afternoon with Mike Rayson. The concert starts at 1 p.m. and a free will offering will be taken.
